The State of Hawai’i Department of Transportation Airports Division (DOT-A) has completed a Final Environmental Assessment (EA), pursuant to Chapter 343, Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), for various airfield, terminal, and facility improvements at the Kona International Airport located in Keahole, North Kona, Hawai’i.

A separate EA pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is also being prepared for select terminal and facility improvements at the Kona International Airport as well.

In October 2010, the DOT-A completed the Kona International Airport at Keahole Airport Master Plan which provides a long-range vision of the developments on airport property. The currently proposed improvements are anticipated to be implemented within the next five to ten years. Included are airfield improvements and airport facilities presented in the master plan, as well as smaller projects that are not specified in the master plan. Terminal and facility improvements addressed in the NEPA EA are those that are anticipated to be implemented within the next three to five years.

For a description of the proposed improvements and their relationship to Chapter 343 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) and the National Environmental Policy Act, please review the respective Project Summaries located in the Project Information section of this website.

Hard copies of the FEA are available for review at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
